There are many tools that can be used to make life easier with diabetes. A specially trained dog is another tool for improving the quality of life for people with this disease.
With the use of a specially trained dog, a person with diabetes can gain greater independence and a sense of security.
Helppes, together with a specialist in training police dogs – specialists in scent work, Bc. Stanislav Beníšek, has developed a completely unique method in the Czech Republic for training signal dogs for people with diabetes and is the only organization in the Czech Republic that uses this reliable and unique method to prepare signal dogs for people with this disease.
When a person with diabetes’ blood sugar level drops or rises, the body releases chemicals that have their own typical odor. A properly trained dog is able to respond to these chemical changes long before undesirable health effects occur and can alert the person to these changes. The affected person or caregiver is then able to check their blood sugar level and take appropriate measures.
The advantage of these specially trained dogs is that they can be more accurate than a measuring device and react earlier than a sensor.
In addition to this signaling work, these dogs are trained to give an insulin pen, a bottle of water, etc., or call for help if necessary.
